Microsoft and Siemens join forces for more efficient building operations

Siemens’ digital building management software will be integrated into the Microsoft Azure platform.

The new collaboration between Microsoft and Siemens makes it easier to operate and optimize larger buildings—such as commercial facilities, data centers, or higher education institutions—on an IoT basis. The agreement enables interoperability between Siemens’ digital building management platform, Building X, and Microsoft Azure IoT Operations services.

The Siemens Building X platform connected to Microsoft Azure cloud-based services, and its various applications supporting areas such as energy management or maintenance, enable the unified management of data from IoT devices that currently operate separately. As a result, the various building operation systems are integrated into a common, transparent interface and can be managed more efficiently.

This makes it possible to integrate data such as information from heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, valve temperature and pressure data, or various characteristics of indoor air quality. This allows customers to develop energy monitoring and optimization settings and maintenance plans tailored to their own buildings.

Thanks to the collaboration, devices installed in buildings will be able to connect to cloud-based systems with a single click, regardless of manufacturer. This is one of the first integrations between providers to be based purely on open industrial standards—the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Web of Things (WoT), and Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture (OPC UA) protocols.

As a result, compared to previous similar integration solutions, the integration can be implemented while saving up to 80 percent of the required resources.
