Industrial-scale production of paper bottles could lead to a radical reduction in the carbon footprint.
The global wine, spirits, and food industries are under increasing pressure when it comes to packaging. Glass production requires furnaces heated to temperatures as high as 1,500°C, typically using fossil fuels; however, the energy crises, rising costs, and raw material shortages of recent years have severely impacted this industry.
At the same time, extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulations are becoming stricter in many markets, requiring companies to pay for the environmental impact of their packaging; heavy materials such as glass are among the most costly categories under this system.
Furthermore, retailers and consumers are paying increasing attention to the carbon footprint of individual products as they hit the shelves. Alcoholic beverages, in fact, account for about one-third of the total environmental impact of retail packaging, primarily due to glass bottles. Moreover, the younger Generation Z and Generation Y increasingly view these as symbols of inaction on climate change rather than a mark of quality, so packaging can also serve as a powerful tool for brands to communicate their climate consciousness.

Lightweight, eco-friendly, and scalable for industrial productionThe British company Frugalpac offers a solution to this challenge. The company’s Frugal Bottle bottles, made from 100 percent recycled cardboard, are currently the only commercially available paper bottles on the market. This packaging reduces the weight of the average 750-milliliter bottle—which weighs nearly half a kilogram—to less than 100 grams, while lowering each product’s water footprint by 76 percent and its carbon footprint by 84 percent.
Since 2020, the company’s first machines have produced 4 million of these paper bottles, resulting in a reduction of nearly 1,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The new generation of equipment has been designed to overcome the obstacles that have hindered global mass production to date: it offers a solution that is faster, more scalable, and more reliable than its predecessors.
The new production line operates at more than five times the previous capacity and is capable of producing approximately 14 million paper bottles annually. Siemens supplied the system’s central technology platform, automation architecture, drives, and data transparency systems.
Wines, spirits, and oils packaged in paper bottles are already available on the shelves of several retail chains in the United Kingdom and Germany, as well as in the United States and Canada. Some partners manufacture the paper bottles at their own facilities, thereby reducing carbon emissions associated with the transportation of empty glass bottles.
The technology will also be on display in mid-July at the Transform 2026 conference in Manchester.
