Energy network operations are being modernized.
Around 16,000 kilometers of transmission lines, 200 high-voltage switchgear units, and 50 generator units make up the German railway company’s electrical energy system. This extensive system is now being modernized by Deutsche Bahn Energie, the company responsible for the energy supply of trains, railway facilities, and properties. The new control system is expected to become operational in 2028.
The central element of the development is the replacement of the existing Siemens network control system with a more modern version. In addition to the introduction of the Siemens Spectrum Power 7 software system, the modernization project also includes numerous new applications and optimization functions. These include, for example, a fully integrated data warehouse for long-term archiving, hardware, server and network components, dedicated training systems, as well as the PSS®SINCAL planning software belonging to the Siemens Gridscale X software portfolio. The system will also receive continuous updates to ensure that it always meets the latest security requirements.
The investment, based on the long-term partnership between DB Energie and Siemens, will help effectively manage the increasing complexity of the network, as well as potential anomalies and security threats. At the same time, it provides easy operation for operators and supports the railway company in becoming climate-neutral by facilitating the use of green electricity and the phase-out of diesel fuels.
Another modernization project was recently completed at DB Energie: in January 2025, a Siemens network control unit ensuring cost-effective energy supply and optimal use of the network generator was commissioned.
