  • Collaboration aims to reduce import resilience, stabilize farmer costs, and strengthen U.S. food security

Siemens and Shomax, a global leader in renewable, carbon and clean energy initiatives announced a collaboration to establish new greenfield production facilities for NitroLEAF, strengthening domestic fertilizer supply at a time of heightened price volatility for American farmers.

The signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is designed to reduce U.S. reliance on imported nitrogen fertilizer, currently accounting for roughly 18 percent of domestic supply, while helping stabilize cost for farmers and supporting long-term U.S. food security. By expanding made-in-America fertilizer production, the project aims to deliver more predictable pricing for growers and reduce exposer to global supply chain and energy disruption.

Produced with green hydrogen via off-grid renewable electrolysis, NitroLEAF, Shomax’s zero-carbon green ammonia fertilizer, is manufactured without natural gas and is structurally insulated from fossil fuel price swings. The fertilizer improves crop yields while reducing overall fertilizer use, offering farmers a lower-carbon, cost-competitive alternative to conventional nitrogen fertilizers that are critical to U.S. crop production and food prices nationwide.

"We are proud to partner with Siemens Industry as we advance our North Texas green ammonia production facility. Siemens brings world-class expertise in process automation, electrical infrastructure, and digital twin technology – capabilities that will accelerate our build-out and drive down capital costs as we scale NitroLEAF to market,” said Irfan Verjee, CEO of Shomax Energy “The timing couldn't be more compelling. Fertilizer prices have risen sharply due to supply chain disruptions, geopolitical pressures on natural gas, and surging agricultural demand. That means higher costs are passed on to farmers. For Shomax, it's the opposite – our hydrocarbon-free, solar-powered process is structurally insulated from those swings, allowing us to offer farmers predictable, stable pricing at a significant discount to market.NitroLEAF is not just a greener fertilizer - it's a more economical one, made in America, for American farmers. With Siemens as our technology partner and the market wind at our backs, we are confident Shomax is positioned to redefine the fertilizer industry."

As a global leader in digital twin technology, Siemens leverages its expertise to drive industrial sustainability by simulating, optimizing and predicting performance, thereby reducing commissioning time and resource consumption. This collaboration with Shomax will integrate Siemens' power distribution, network architecture design, process automation, and digital twin simulations to optimize the design and operation of the new NitroLEAF facilities.

"Siemens is thrilled to announce our strategic collaboration with Shomax Energy, a partnership poised to revolutionize the domestic fertilizer market,"said Tony White, Head of Siemens Chemical and Energy Markets in the USA. "Together, we are accelerating the production of low-cost, net-zero fertilizer, directly addressing the critical need for sustainable and secure agricultural inputs. Siemens’ cutting-edge digital twin technologies, deployed across the entire value chain, will not only de-risk project implementation but also significantly reduce costs, enhance operational efficiency, and elevate safety standards."

The initial facility is planned for North Texas, positioning production close to key U.S. agricultural regions while contributing regional economic development and domestic manufacturing capacity. Together, Siemens and Shomax see the collaboration as a model for scaling sustainable industrial production in the United States.
