Journalist Marija Dedić of the eKapija portal is one of the five finalists in the regional Siemens Media Award 2024 competition, which this year was held across nine Central and Eastern European countries (Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Serbia). With her article entitled What Rights Could Artificial Intelligence Put at Risk – Will Elena Ramirez Save Us?, Marija will compete for the regional title, with the winner set to be announced on May 24 in Vienna.
The Siemens Media Award aims to recognize high-quality and creative reporting in the field of technology while encouraging excellence in investigative journalism covering technological progress and the importance of innovation in both industry and everyday life. This year’s competition brought together media professionals and social media content creators with entries on the theme “Technology with Purpose.” Marija Dedić’s article explores the rapid development of artificial intelligence and raises questions about its impact on our lives, as well as the ethical guidelines and legal frameworks surrounding this field.
“We were pleased to once again take part in organizing the Siemens Media Award, which was launched in Serbia fifteen years ago and has been held at the regional level since 2015. It is an even greater honor that this year a contribution by a Serbian journalist has been selected among the five best entries in a strong field of authors from as many as nine countries. The media serve as a public guide through the world of innovation and an interpreter of the latest discoveries, and high-quality reporting on modern technologies is extremely important in today’s rapidly changing environment. It helps us understand complex innovations more easily and clearly while demonstrating how they can improve our daily lives,” said Jovana Vukotić, Head of Corporate Communications at Siemens Serbia.
This year, the international jury was tasked with selecting the five most original entries, which automatically qualified for the final stage of the competition in Vienna. Together with her colleagues—the highest-ranked authors from Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia—Marija will compete for the title of the best entry in Central and Eastern Europe. The five selected authors will attend the Concordia Ball, Vienna’s renowned event for media professionals, while the winner of the Siemens Media Award will be announced at a gala event in the same city on May 24. The grand prize is a trip for two to the Salzburg Festival in Austria.
