Siemens is planning a new greenfield digital factory in the Western industrial zone of Sibiu, scheduled to be operational by 2028, subject to obtaining all required authorizations. The planned investment, amounting to several tens of millions of euros, targets a distinct Siemens business unit with its own specific product portfolio and operational footprint, and is not related to other manufacturing activities. This investment reflects a long-term industrial strategy aimed at specific market segments.
Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2026 and is expected to reach completion by 2028, pending all necessary permits and approvals. The planned facility is set to cover approximately 14,500 m² and it is intended to be developed in partnership with WDP, which is acting as an investor and landlord, under a long-term lease agreement, in full compliance with local laws and regulations.
Built on Siemens Technology, Designed for the Future
The planned Sibiu factory is designed to be a data-driven production environment, built on Siemens' own technologies and solutions. Prior to construction, the shop floor is planned to be virtually designed using Siemens Digital Twin technology — enabling precise simulation and optimization of layouts, workflows, and production processes to determine the best possible setup from day one.
The portfolio that will be available in the new site will include the low voltage SENTRON product range, dedicated to protection, switching measuring and monitoring (such as miniature circuit breakers, residual current circuit breakers, residual current circuit breakers with overcurrent protection and electronic circuit protection devices) for industrial and domestic applications.
The highly flexible, AI-driven and self-learning Manufacturing
Siemens is planning a smart and highly flexible manufacturing in which Artificial intelligence is expected to play an increasingly important role. The focus will be on seamless data networking and intelligent control from raw material provision, through assembly and testing, to final delivery. Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) will transport materials to the production lines fully autonomously. The integration of automation and robotics is also part of the strategy.
In addition to efficiency gains, Siemens also expects to increase flexibility, enabling it to react quickly to changing conditions and meet future customer demands.
Carbon-Neutral by Design
Sustainability is planned to be central to how this factory is built and operated. The facility is designed to run on a carbon-neutral basis, with energy efficiency embedded across all manufacturing processes. Skylights fitted with tubular daylighting devices are planned to channel natural sunlight directly into the production area through highly reflective tubes, reducing reliance on artificial lighting. A rooftop photovoltaic system is scheduled to be installed after completion, with on-site solar power intended to be used directly and remaining electricity planned to be sourced from sustainable suppliers.
A Workplace Built for People and Progress
The planned factory is designed to be an ergonomic, digitally connected workplace built for collaboration and continuous learning. Dedicated training facilities are planned to help employees build skills in automation, data analysis, and ECPD development. The modern office and social spaces are also designed to ensure full accessibility, including for people with disabilities or mobility impairments.
