A powerful megawatt charger is entering the market

Siemens has introduced its most powerful e-charger to date, with an output of 1.68 MW.

Siemens has unveiled a megawatt charger with higher charging capacity than ever before, designed for depot and en-route charging of electric buses and trucks, as well as logistics and corporate electric fleets. The new chargers will first prove themselves along Austrian motorways.

Tailored to individual needs

The chargers in the next-generation SICHARGE FLEX product family can deliver DC (direct current) charging power ranging from 480 kilowatts (kW) up to 1.68 megawatts (MW), providing dynamic power distribution and up to 1,500 A (amps) of current. Their modular and scalable design makes it possible to install them according to different requirements and site conditions. The new model is based on a dynamic power distribution system that intelligently allocates energy between multiple charging points and vehicles according to current demand. Thanks to the wide power range, the energy supplied by each charging point can be adjusted in 80/120 kW increments. The new product family supports both CCS (Combined Charging System) and MCS (Megawatt Charging System) charging standards, making it possible to install up to four MCS charging points with a single charging unit.

Minimal space requirement

Featuring industry-leading power density (up to 656 kW/m²), the extremely compact charging units require only minimal floor space (0.1–0.2 m²) for installation. Thanks to their cooling system, they can also be mounted on walls or overhead, providing a significant advantage where space is limited. In addition, the charging units can be installed up to 300 meters away from the central power supply, enabling them to operate in an even wider range of environments. The new solution is easy to install and maintain and can be seamlessly integrated into existing systems. Equipped with the Sifinity Control cloud-based monitoring solution, the devices provide operators with complete visibility and remote control, ensuring maximum uptime, operational efficiency, and customization. When integrated with the DepotFinity energy management solution, the charging of electric fleets can be optimized even when grid capacity is limited, reducing the need for costly infrastructure upgrades. The new model also includes cybersecurity features.

It will serve a busy logistics corridor

OMV Austria has already ordered the first SICHARGE FLEX charging system as part of a pilot project, and it will be installed at the Kufstein charging station on the busy A12 motorway connecting Germany and Italy. In the first phase, six charging points will be installed, with plans to expand to ten charging points following the local distribution system operator's (DSO's) grid upgrade.
