A new type of protection solution for power grids

Up to 60 hardware-based protection devices can be replaced with virtualization.

Virtualization, which has already proven itself in IT, is also playing an increasingly important role in electrical power networks. A new solution that has just been introduced can accelerate the expansion of power networks and reduce the space requirements of substation buildings.

The new Siprotec V combines the functionality of up to 60 hardware-based Siemens Siprotec 5 devices in a single server-based solution. These widely used intelligent protection and field control devices continuously monitor the electrical network and, in the event of a fault (such as a short circuit), disconnect the affected section, thus ensuring the continued reliable operation of the network.

Thanks to virtualization, Siprotec V enables comprehensive digital testing of substation protection and control technology as well as communication configurations even before commissioning. This not only simplifies installation, speeds up testing and minimizes errors, but also allows for quick adaptation to changing system requirements, regardless of hardware limitations. This facilitates the smooth introduction of software updates, fixes, and functional enhancements, as well as compliance with current and future cybersecurity standards.

Furthermore, replacing hardware devices means fewer switch cabinets, copper cables, and other physical equipment are required. This saves 25 percent of capital expenditure (CAPEX) costs per substation and half of the carbon dioxide emissions associated with installation and material use, while energy suppliers can save up to 20 percent of total life cycle costs.

Siprotec V also enables advanced artificial intelligence applications to run directly in the substation environment, providing power companies with real-time insight, predictive analytics, and better decision support.
