A paradigm shift in line and equipment protection.

As energy distribution becomes increasingly complex, it is now of paramount importance to ensure complete transparency in electrical networks, all the way to end users. This helps prevent outages and optimize operating costs. In addition, the efficient operation of an increasing number of systems operating in remote or hard-to-reach locations also demands new solutions.

The SENTRON electronic circuit protection device (ECPD) addresses these challenges. By combining semiconductor technology, microcontrollers, and intelligent algorithms, it replaces traditional electromechanical protection switches and brings digital intelligence and transparency to the edge. This represents a fundamental shift in the fields of facility, touch, lightning, and fire protection.

Transparency, fault diagnostics, and secure remote control

Compared to its electromechanical counterparts, the ECPD device offers significantly faster tripping—up to a thousand times faster—extremely low short-circuit current, and consequently a longer service life. Thanks to its built-in measurement function, it provides real-time information on the device’s status and current and voltage values, and enables automatic, cyclic self-testing of the residual current device (RCD) function.

This allows for the timely and reliable detection of abnormal operation, enabling repairs even before a failure occurs. In the event of a critical deviation, immediate remote intervention can be initiated, which speeds up troubleshooting. Previously, when a circuit breaker tripped, the operator was notified of the fault but received no information about its cause and could not resolve it remotely. An on-site inspection was required to determine whether the issue was a true short circuit, a transient overcurrent, or a false trip. This resulted in unnecessary field visits, downtime, and lost production.

The new communication-enabled protection device enables continuous remote monitoring, fault diagnostics, and safe remote reclosing, transforming the way remote facilities are maintained.

Multifunctional, space-saving, and sustainable

The SENTRON ECPD combines the functions of up to 10 conventional devices—such as a miniature circuit breaker, residual current device, meter, current monitoring relay, diagnostic module, and remote monitoring and control functions—into a single unit, thus providing protection, measurement data, and digital monitoring in the distribution system all at once.

As a result, it is manufactured using 80 percent less electronic components and 90 percent less metal and plastic raw materials, and thanks to its compact design, it requires 80 percent less space than the combined use of other similar devices.

The ECPD is therefore ideal for applications that require fast response times, remote monitoring, and space savings. Examples include highly automated buildings or those with many consumers (e.g., office buildings), equipment with high capacitive loads that can generate significant inrush current peaks (e.g., LED walls and advertising displays), or where significant cost savings can be achieved by reducing cabling and simplifying installation (e.g., large parking garages, tunnels).

Next generation: Integrated residual current protection and three-phase version

In addition to the standard device already available on the domestic market, Siemens has announced an expanded version of the SENTRON ECPD devices, which will feature integrated residual current monitoring (RCM) functionality. The device will thus be able to monitor leakage current 24/7, allowing electrical faults to be detected early on without downtime, thereby protecting valuable equipment. The solution is particularly useful in systems with high safety and availability requirements, such as data centers, pharmaceutical and chemical applications, or lighting systems.

The technology company also plans to introduce a three-phase ECPD version for 400 V systems (400 V/32 A/50 Hz). This version is optimized for applications such as conveyor belts, elevators, heat pumps, air conditioning systems, or the power supply for uninterruptible power supplies (UPS systems).
