Siemens to equip FAMUR Gearo test station

Warszawa

  • Contract worth nearly EUR 3.5 million

Thanks to Siemens' modern technological solutions, the test station of one of Grenevia SA’s divisions – FAMUR Gearo – where wind turbine gearboxes are tested, will increase its power from 1.8 to 5.4 MW. This will allow the company to expand both its repair capabilities and its own production of these components. It will also become the second-largest facility of its kind in this part of the continent.

Grenevia Group is an investment holding company with four business segments – the largest of which is FAMUR. Under the FAMUR Gearo brand, it is consistently increasing its involvement in the wind energy sector, offering comprehensive solutions, including repairs of wind turbine gearboxes and their testing at the test station (dynamometer).

Grenevia equips the test station thanks to European Funds

Thanks to funding from the European Union for the project “Diversification of activities towards a zero-emission economy and strengthening employment potential,” under the “European Funds for Silesia 2021–2027” program, the company obtained resources for, among other things, the purchase of a license for wind turbine production technology and the development of a machinery park, enabling the expansion of production and repair of wind turbine gearboxes.

A key aspect of this project is the purchase of new equipment for the company’s test station, which allows for testing and running-in of new and refurbished gearboxes. To this end, Grenevia decided to leverage the long-standing experience of Siemens Sp. z o.o., a company specializing in delivering advanced technological solutions for industry.

“Our experience in building similar test units and previous cooperation with Famur resulted in the signing of a contract that will allow the brand to provide comprehensive services for the RES segment. With our support, the test station will become the second-largest such facility in this part of Europe,”
– says Tomasz Lazar, Director of Customer Services at Siemens Sp. z o.o.

From 1.8 to 5.4 MW. The investment opens new possibilities

At the end of February 2025, the companies signed a contract worth nearly EUR 3.5 million gross. Thanks to Siemens technology, including the modular SINAMICS S120 drive system, the station will reach a rated power of 5.4 MW (currently – 1.8 MW) at 1470 rpm, with the ability to smoothly adjust both rotational speed and load value to the individual parameters of the tested gearboxes. Its commissioning is planned for December 2025.

“Upgrading the test station is not only a technical leap forward but also a clear signal that FAMUR Gearo is consistently strengthening its position in the renewable energy sector. Thanks to cooperation with Siemens, we are significantly increasing the testing capabilities of the station, which will translate not only into an expanded scope of gearbox repairs but also enable us to produce our own Polish wind turbine gearboxes,”
– says Paweł Majcherkiewicz, Vice President of the Management Board of FAMUR SA, responsible for the development of wind energy within the Grenevia Group under the FAMUR Gearo brand.

Thanks to the investment, the station will become a modern, comprehensive testing facility consisting of two motors, an advanced control system, a cooling system, and a set of auxiliary systems. A key feature of the station will be its ability to overload up to 150% of the rated torque, allowing for testing of gearboxes with power up to 8.1 MW. This, in turn, will enable not only the repair of gearboxes from the secondary market but also their production for new wind turbines.
